A Pastoral Word
On Sunday, July 29th, Midway Christian Church voted to approve the proposal for the Director of Church and Community Music position. And as the vote was happening, I couldn't help but think of the passage from Matthew: "And He said to them, "For truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you." I know that this commitment is a huge leap of faith for this congregation. I know that it is filled with unknowns. I know that there are no guarantees. But this vision of bringing our community together through music just feels like it is God saying I'm laying this vision upon your hearts and now is the time to trust.
As we've explored options and asked the questions, amazingly the journey doesn't seem as filled with obstacles any more. Once again, it feels like for every obstacle or mountain we put forward and for every good reason why we can't do this, God is saying, "Why not?" For example, in conversations with one of our guest accompanists who runs the Music Institute of Lexington, she mentioned, wouldn't it be great if somehow we entered a partnership with the Music Institute concerning our choir, because she has been thinking lately about starting a branch in Midway. Now, I'm not sure how this partnership will work or what it will look like but it has some great potential! And in response to conversations about how we are going to fund this position, one of our members, Jack Morgan, gave a generous gift in memory of Charlotte , his beautiful wife who always had a love of music, to help with some of the costs of the choir. Now, I know that this is a one-time gift but what a gift! It helps us get started and give the choirs a try.
For me, it really does feel like we can move mountains, or at the very least, continue to take a leap of faith and trust that God is leading us and guiding us. All because we have faith!
